Overview

Attendees of this course will receive a case-driven, practical, and implementable set of skills for space business and company growth. Beyond generic tips and recommendations, this course will provide participants with a holistic picture of current space policy, market drivers, and supply chain which attendees can easily and immediately put to use.

Space facilitates and enables most data for essential services that we depend on daily – cellular networks, broadband internet, freight logistics and tracking, and weather and national security alerts. Almost 3,000 active satellites currently orbit the Earth, with tens of thousands more planned for launch in the next 10 years. Plans for human spaceflight around and beyond our planet are expanding rapidly. Currently valued at $366 billion, the space sector’s value is projected to grow to $1 trillion+ by 2040. These trends present an exciting prospect, but they also beg a question: where will we get the infrastructure to sustainably support such growth and the related in-orbit activity to go with it? The growing congestion in orbit demands better situational awareness and flexibility for active spacecraft, and removal of dangerous debris. The ROI from the millions invested in satellites and other spacecraft and the profits from related services should no longer be limited by the design and fuel constraints built in before launch. The foundational infrastructure of the future orbital environment and economy will be built on sustainable practices, policies, and technologies on the ground and in orbit.

This course provides an overview of the drivers and the solutions for creating a space economy and environment that balance growth with sustainability. It defines what business sustainability means across the space sector, and it describes the current state of space in terms of opportunities for and threats to sustainable growth. It outlines the technology, policy, and business considerations that frame a holistic approach to sustainability. Finally, it illustrates possibilities and best practices in on-orbit services that enable safe, secure, and sustainable activity for current and future space systems and users.

Instructors

Ron Lopez, President & Managing Director, Astroscale U.S.

Ron joined Astroscale as Managing Director in April 2019 to lead the company’s business operations in the United States.

Ron brings over 25 years of government and industry experience, encompassing systems engineering, program management, sales and marketing, technology/research and development management, and strategy formulation.

Ron started his career as an Intelligence Officer in the United States Air Force, serving as the focal point for Space Situational Awareness capability development at Air Force Space Command’s Space Control Division. He then joined Boeing and worked on various programs as a Systems Engineering Manager within Boeing Research & Technology and Phantom Works and led business development activities for the Network & Space Systems division throughout the Asia Pacific region. Prior to joining Astroscale, Ron led the Defense & Space Asia Pacific sales team at Honeywell Aerospace, helping the company achieve significant sales growth and expansion into new markets.

Over half of Ron’s career has been spent working and living in Japan, and he is an active member of The Maureen and Mike Mansfield Foundation’s U.S.-Japan Space Forum.

Ron earned a Bachelor of Science degree from The United States Air Force Academy in 1993.


Clare Martin, Executive Vice President, Astroscale U.S.

Dr. Martin joined Astroscale U.S. in August 2019 as SVP of Operations and Programs. She brings many years of space technology management, operations, and engineering expertise to the Astroscale team.

Dr. Martin previously held the position of the Director, Orbital Solutions at General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS). She was responsible for the management and technical performance of the engineering staff and delivery of projects, including planning and managing technical and programmatic solutions to ensure quality, business, and financial objectives were met.

Prior to joining GA-EMS, Dr. Martin was the Chief Operating Officer at Surrey Satellite Technology US, where she led the Surrey project management and engineering teams. As a member of the Surrey Satellite US executive team, Dr. Martin managed the bidding, negotiation, and execution of projects, and was responsible for ensuring the company’s cost-effective methods were appropriately applied to the execution of programs.

Dr. Martin joined Surrey Satellite US from Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd. in the United Kingdom, where she held several positions including the Head of Telecommunications and Navigation business unit, encompassing the Galileo payload programme. Prior to Surrey, Dr. Martin was a project manager and scientist at QinetiQ.

Dr. Martin earned a Master of Science in astrophysics and a Doctorate in mathematics and computational sciences from the University of St. Andrews in Scotland.


Dave Fischer, Vice President, Business Development & Advanced Systems, Astroscale U.S.

Dave Fischer joined Astroscale U.S. in March 2020 to lead the company’s exploration of new business opportunities and partnerships. He brings over 30 years of experience in business and technology management.

Most recently, he was Director of Business Development for RUAG Space USA. Prior to that, he was with Ball Aerospace, where his business development work spanned across the commercial, NASA, DoD, and Intelligence Community markets. He also held roles in the Program Management Office and led the Strategic Development team, where he was responsible for market assessments,  strategy development, and proposal reviews. He started his career designing astrophysics instruments at the University of Chicago, and went on to lead the development of astrophysics observatories at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole station.

He holds a Bachelor of Science in physics from the University of Chicago and continues to be an active volunteer for his alma mater, currently serving as the President of the Military Alumni Group.


Charity Weeden, Vice President, Global Space Policy, Astroscale U.S.

Charity joined Astroscale U.S. in July 2019. She coordinates and synchronizes Astroscale’s global policy efforts towards spaceflight safety and long-term space sustainability.

Charity brings a rich experience in aerospace operations, advocacy, and diplomacy. She is a 23-year veteran of the Royal Canadian Air Force, was previously Senior Director of Policy at the Satellite Industry Association, and formed a consulting business to support the space industry.

Charity serves as the Chair of the Commercial Space Transportation Advisory Committee, is a fellow of the Canadian Global Affairs Institute, and is a mentor for the Brooke Owens Fellowship.

Charity received her Bachelor of Engineering in mechanical engineering from the Royal Military College of Canada and a Master of Science in space science from the University of North Dakota. She is an alumnus of the International Space University Summer Session Program.

We will be using Microsoft Teams to facilitate your participation in the upcoming event. You do not need to have an existing Teams account in order to participate in the broadcast – the course will play in your browser and you will have the option of using a microphone to speak with the room and ask questions, or type any questions in via the chat window and our on-site representative will relay your question to the instructor.

  • You will receive a meeting invitation will include a link to join the meeting.

Cancellation Policy

Your registration may be transferred to a member of your organization up to 24 hours in advance of the event. Cancellations must be received on or before May 21, 2021 in order to be refunded and will be subject to a US $195.00 processing fee per registrant. No refunds will be made after this date. Cancellations received after this date will create a credit of the tuition (less processing fee) good toward any other LRA Institute event. This credit will be good for six months from the cancellation date. In the event of non-attendance, all registration fees will be forfeited. In case of conference cancellation, EUCIs liability is limited to refund of the event registration fee only.
